CHAPTER 6 ORGANON
Lays out the philosophy of the system30-69:
§ 30 Fifth Edition
The human body appears to admit of being much more powerfully affected in its health by medicines (partly because we have the regulation of the dose in our own power) than by natural morbid stimuli - for natural diseases are cured and overcome by suitable medicines.
§ 30 Sixth Edition
The human body appears to admit of being much more powerfully affected in its health by medicines (partly because we have the regulation of the dose in our own power) than by natural morbid stimuli - for natural diseases are cured and overcome by suitable medicines.
11
The short duration of the action of the artificial morbific
forces, which we term medicines, makes it possible that, although they are
stronger than the natural diseases, they can yet be much more easily overcome by
the vital force than can the weaker natural diseases, which solely in
consequence of the longer, generally lifelong, duration of their action (psora,
syphilis, sycosis), can never be vanquished and extinguished by it alone, until
the physician affects the vital force in a stronger manner by an agent that
produces a disease very similar, but stronger to wit a homœopathic medicine.
The cures of diseases of many years’ duration (§ 46), by the occurrence of
smallpox and measles (both of which run a course of only a few weeks), are
processes of a similar character.
Medicine are superior than disease because
|
we have the regulation of the dose in our own power than by natural natural disease-one get infected only conditionally that is only when susceptibility is satisfied. |
|
|
For natural diseases are cured and overcome by suitable medicines. |
The inimical forces, partly psychical, partly physical, to
which our terrestrial existence is exposed, which are termed morbific noxious
agents, do not possess the power of morbidly deranging the health of man
unconditionally
1 When I call a disease a derangement of man’s state of health, I am far from wishing thereby to give a hyperphysical explanation of the internal nature of disease generally, or of any case of disease in particular. It is only intended by this expression to intimate, what it can be proved diseases are not and cannot be, that they are not mechanical or chemical alterations of material substance of the body, and not dependant on a material morbific substance, but that they are merely spirit-like (conceptual) dynamic derangements of the life.
commentary:
susceptibility:
Dr.
Hahnemann discribes susceptibility:
EXPLANATION OF THE FIRST PART :The psychic and physical inimical influences
that we come across in the
world and that we call disease agents, do not have absolute power to influence
all the individual or there must be conditions or predisposition for individual to be diseased by
such external influence.
SECOND PART: these conditions or predisposition in an individual to be diseased by such external influence is called susceptibility:.
For example in an chickenpox epidemic all the person in a family do not get it even though all of them are exposed to chickenpox virus. Same is true of cholera. Some are susceptible to influence of bad weather-which bring cough, coryza etc., some are susceptible to slightest change in food eg. those food which has spices in excess could not be tolerated by some, some cannot tolerate chocolate etc.
Dr Stuart M. CLOSE has given the definition of susceptibility "By susceptibility we mean the general quality or capability of the living organism of receiving impressions; the power to react to stimuli. Susceptibility is one of the fundamental attributes of life. Upon it depends all functioning, all vital processes, physiological and pathological. Digestion, assimilation, nutrition, repair, secretion, excretion, metabolism and catabolism, as well as all disease processes arising from infection or contagion depend upon the power of the organism to react to specific stimuli."
FROM Dr Stuart M. CLOSE'S DEFINITION IT IS CLEAR THAT ONE MUST BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BE DISEASED, SUSCEPTIBLE TO MEDICINE TO PROVE IT IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUAL AND FURTHER ONE MUST BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO MEDICINE IN ORDER TO CURE A DISEASE CONDITION.
SUSCEPTIBILITY IN CURE
The cure and relief of diseases depend upon the same power of the organism to react to the impression of the curative remedy or susceptibility of the individual to the remedy.
SUSCEPTIBILITY IN PROVING
When we administer a drug to a healthy person for the purpose of making a homœopathic "proving" , the constellation of symptoms which follows represents the reaction of the susceptible organism to the or stimulus( homoeopathic drug) administered.
SUSCEPTIBILITY IN ADMINISTRATION OF CURATIVE REMEDY IN SICK
When a Homœopathically selected medicine is administered to a sick person, the disappearance of the symptoms and regaining of the patient to health constitutes the reaction of the susceptible organism to the impression of the curative remedy.
APPLICATION IN HEALTH : NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO EXTERNAL INFLUENCE
Basically, a strong
constitution is one that can withstand considerable pressure without falling
ill. They are not susceptible to external influences. They are not
susceptible to climatic changes to produce disease. They are not
susceptible to food that produce disease.
SUSCEPTIBILITY IN GENERAL
Stuart clause "We shall see that the kind and degree of reaction to medicines depends upon the degree of susceptibility of the patient, and that the kind and degree of susceptibility, in any particular case or patient, depends largely upon how the case is handled by the physician; for it is in his power to modify susceptibility. Indeed, this power to modify susceptibility is the basis of the art of the physician.
If the physician knows how to modify susceptibility in such a way as to satisfy the requirements of the sick organism and bring about a true cure, then is he a physician indeed; since cure consists simply in satisfying the morbid susceptibility of the organism and putting an end to the influx of disease-producing causes. To accomplish this he must know that susceptibility implies and includes affinity, attraction, desire, hunger, need; that these all exist and express themselves normally as states and conditions in every living being; but that they may become morbid and perverted and so cause disease, suffering and death. He knows also that susceptibility implies the existence of the wherewithal to satisfy susceptibility; to supply need, hunger, desire, affinity, attraction, and he knows how and where to find the necessary modifying agents."
I HAVE TAKEN AN EXTRACT OF STUART CLOSE TO GIVE YOU MORE ILLUSTRATION OF WHAT SUSCEPTIBILITY MEAN BROADLY.
According to Stuart close susceptibility is applied in more aspects than proving drugs on healthy individual and applying same in diseased individual. There are mainly two kinds of susceptibility
|
positive susceptibility |
|
|
negative susceptibility |
positive susceptibility: By positive susceptibility we mean the general quality or capability of the living organism of receiving impressions; the power to react to stimuli positively.
Positive susceptibility is needed for proper mechanism of all bodily activities and there by contribute to ‘state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. E.g. digestion of food (food is stimuli), after digestion the nutrients are assimilated in the body, excretion of waste after digestion, curative action of homoeopathic drugs, etc. All normal physiological activities are due to positive susceptibility. We may feel cold on wintry morning, or feel hot during summer, all these capabilities are normal and are therefore positive susceptibility.
Negative susceptibility By negative susceptibility we mean the general quality or capability of the living organism of receiving impressions; the power to react to stimuli negatively.
Negative susceptibility is negative process which is inimical to normal development of the individual and there by contribute to a diseased state. Lets pick up the same example of positive susceptibility E.g. indigestion of food (food is stimuli)- here certain food material may cause diarrhea, after digestion the nutrients are not assimilated in the body and cause vitamin deficiency disease, diarrhea may result (excretion of waste after digestion), action of homoeopathic drugs on healthy individual producing disease etc
Both this positive susceptibility as well as negative susceptibility can be applied in three levels
|
emotional level of susceptibility |
|
|
mental level of susceptibility |
|
|
physical level of susceptibility |
Emotional level of susceptibility: Some of us may react to certain situation angrily (negative susceptibility) where as some others are hardly affected in the same situation (positive susceptibility). In this competitive world one may be look greedily at wealth of neighbour that we call envy, where as others in the same situation is hardly bothered about the neighbours wealth (positive susceptibility). some time in the same family persons react differently e.g. wife look greedily at wealth of neighbour (negative susceptibility), husband is hardly affected by such things (positive susceptibility).
Mental level of susceptibility: Some people can take difficult task without any affect (positive susceptibility) but some others are affected by small amount of mental exertion and further may cause lack of concentration or dullness (negative susceptibility).
physical level of susceptibility: Some of us can take enduring physical task very easily (positive susceptibility), same task may produce head ache in others (negative susceptibility)
HOMOEOPATHY
This morbid susceptibility which forms disease may exist toward different medicines, the degree of susceptibility to each depending upon the degree of symptom similarity; but the highest degree of susceptibility exists toward the most similar - the simillimum, or equal. Hence, a given patient may be cured of his disease homœopathically by either of two methods; by giving several more or less similar medicines in succession, or by giving one exactly similar medicine--the similimum or equal.
Allopathy causes artificial drug disease
Many drug substances are used medically in such form, in such doses, by such methods and upon such principles as to be distinctly damaging of normal reactivity. They are forced upon or into the suffering organism empirically (by trial and error method) without regarding nature's laws. So far as their effect upon disease is concerned they are in no wise curative, but only palliative or suppressive and the ultimate result, if it be not death, is to leave the patient in a worse state than he was earlier. More over existing disease symptoms are transformed into the symptoms of an artificial drug disease. The organism is overwhelmed by a more powerful enemy which invades its territory, takes violent possession and sets up its own domain.
CHARACTERS OF SUSCEPTIBILITY
-Susceptibility as a state may be increased, diminished or destroyed.
We must also know both state of normal susceptibility to remedial as well as harmful toxic agencies, which it is the duty of the physician to maintain and utilize. No agent or procedure should be used as a therapeutic measure which has the power to, lessen, break down or destroy the normal susceptibility or reactibility of the organism, because that is one of the most worthful medical assets we possess. Example. Excess use of antibiotics may destroy normal reactivity of individual. If we use antibiotics, side affects are present which is additional burden for vital force which is already succumb to disease. To use agents in such a manner or in such quantity as to lessen, the power of the organism to react to stimuli, is to adjust ourselves with the forces of death and disintegration . Preservation of the power of the organism to react defensively to a toxin, or an infection is as important as it is to preserve the power to react constructively to food and drink, or curatively to the homœopathic remedy. Stuart clause says "It is as normal and necessary for the organism to react pathogenetically to a poison, in proportion to the size and power of the dose, as it is to react physiologically to a good dinner."
-Susceptibility varies in degree in different patients, and at different times in the same patient.
In small pox infected area one catches disease from another. One may suffer heavily. Another may be least infected. Another person dies from same infection. The cause why he succumbed was in him long before the infector (Variola) appeared. Susceptibility to a disease is already present in the individual or his race. But gets infection only when he is infected. For the air is full of diseases waiting to be employed.
Some people who did not get infection in the previous epidemic may get infection now.
